Client: Juniper Networks
Project Objectives:
Create a complete thermal design (system-, board-, and package level) given the fan redundancy, filtration, and environmental requirements of NEBS and the space limitations created by 2 or 3 systems per rack.
Achievements:
Though overall board size and backplane layout was dictated by Juniper, free reign over the thermal design was given to Applied Thermal.
Although backward curved impellers are typically used in such dense systems, Applied Thermal demonstrated that a push-pull axial fan design would be superior in several systems for improved redundancy and maximized airflow.
A novel thermal design for the rear card cage, using new high-pressure 60 mm axial fans, was also found.
