Measurement & Test Laboratory

Whether you supply the design or we do, Applied’s extensive test capabilities can isolate problems and verify designs. If necessary, we can fabricate prototypes or mock-ups for testing. We regularly design and fabricate custom test devices that meet or exceed industry standards in order to test real-world electronics cooling solutions.

We can also generate special test conditions such as vacuum or elevated air temperatures. With the appropriate test setup in place, we validate the computer models used to generate the design or isolate problem areas.

We tailor the test procedure to include data capture with the details you need, such as thermal images of the design under test, to ensure a thorough understanding of the system dynamics. Based on test results, we recommend or implement design improvements.

Acoustic Tests of Electronic Equipment and Airborn Noise emitted by the Computer – in the Bay Area

We can conduct acoustic tests to ISO 7779 measuring sound pressure and sound power in the acoustic chamber. Background noise in the anechoic chamber is consistently below 20 db(A) and with special arrangements can be below 15 dB(A). Chamber “useful” inner dimensions are: 8 feet height, 5.5 feet length and width.

We commonly test:

Heat Sinks
• Thermal resistance and pressure drop characterization of active and passive heat sinks in forced and natural convection
• Force deflection, strength, and yield testing for heat sinks and heat sink attachments

Thermal Interface Materials
• Thermal interface testing according to ASTM standards

Coolers/Air-to-Air Heat Exchangers
• Fully functional testing of cabinet coolers such as those used industry-wide in telecom cabinets and electrical enclosures

• Heat exchanger core thermal testing up to and including 3300 W, along with pressure characterization of the core geometry

Fans
• Full characterization of fan characteristics including airflow, pressure drop, noise, and accelerated life testing

Rack-mounted Systems
• Airflow, noise, and temperature characterization

Integrated Circuits
• Package thermal resistance measurement

Our test capabilities include:

• Wind tunnel testing (up to 3200 CFM) measured using controlled orifices and differential pressure transducers

• Automated acquisition of thermocouple, RTD, relative humidity transducer, and differential pressure transducer data.

• Air velocities, pressure drop and temperature measurements using hot wire anemometers, a combined airflow and temperature measurement system, thermocouples, and an infrared imaging system

• Accelerated life testing*

• Accelerated stress testing*

• Photomicroscopy to isolate defects in a manufacturing process*

*Note: These procedures may add slightly to the overall project time.
